Cleaning makes them look good again, but sealing is what makes it last. A clean on its own clears the moss, weeds and stains, and if that’s all you want, that’s a fair option. The catch is that without sealing, the joints stay open, so the weeds and growth come back, and the sand keeps washing out. Sealing locks it all in, protects the colour and makes the surface much easier to keep clean. If you’re cleaning them anyway, sealing at the same time is what gets you years out of the work instead of a season.
Paver & Interlock Cleaning & Sealing in Halifax
ProCare cleans and seals paver and interlock surfaces across Halifax, from patios and walkways to driveways and pool decks. Over time the joints wash out, weeds and moss move in, and the surface fades and stains. We clear all of it, re-sand the joints to lock the pavers back together, and seal the surface so it holds its color and stays easier to maintain. It’s the difference between a patio that looks good for a weekend and one that stays that way for years.. We are fully licensed, insured, and BBB accredited.
Why pavers go green, weedy and loose
Pavers don’t fail all at once, they slip a little every season. The sand packed between them slowly washes out with rain and snow melt, and once those joints open up, weeds and moss move straight in, and ants start nesting underneath. At the same time, the damp, shaded spots grow green and black, and you’ll often see a chalky white haze creep across the surface. That haze is salt working its way out of the concrete itself.
Our freeze-and-thaw winters push it further. Water gets into the open joints, freezes, and lifts pavers out of line, so a patio that was flat a few years ago starts to feel uneven underfoot. None of it means the pavers are ruined. It means the surface has been left unsealed and the joints have given out, and both of those can be put right.
Cleaning alone makes them look good for a season, but the weeds, the green and the loose joints all come back. Re-sanding the joints and sealing the surface is what actually holds it. The new sand locks the pavers together, and the sealer keeps that sand in place, slows the weeds and moss, guards the colour against fading and stains, and makes the whole surface far easier to rinse clean from then on.
What our paver cleaning & sealing includes
- Deep cleaning of the paver surface to clear moss, algae, dirt and black growth
- Removing weeds and growth out of the joints
- Treating surface stains with algaecide or non-organic stains (rust, grease, etc)
- Re-sanding the joints with polymeric or kiln dried sand to lock the pavers and keep weeds and ants out
- Sealing the surface to protect the colour, resist stains and slows regrowth
- Your choice of finish: a natural matte look or an enhanced wet look that deepens the colour (optional)
What surfaces we clean and seal
- Paver and interlock patios
- Walkways, paths and garden steps
- Paver and interlock driveways
- Pool decks and surrounds
- Brick and concrete paver steps and edging
We provide an honest assessment first. If an area has heaved or sunk badly, we’ll tell you it needs re-levelling before sealing, not just a clean.
Our paver cleaning & sealing process
- Inspection: We check the condition of the pavers and the joints, and flag any areas that have shifted or sunk
- Protection: We cover nearby plants, beds and fixtures before any cleaning solution goes down
- Cleaning: We clear weeds, moss and growth, and treat staining and the white efflorescence haze.
- Drying: The pavers have to be fully dry before sand and sealer go on. In our damp weather, this is the step rushed jobs skip, and it’s why their sealer fails
- Re-sanding: We sweep fresh polymeric or kiln-dried sand into the joints and set it, locking the pavers back together
- Sealing: We apply the sealer in the finish you’ve chosen, natural or enhanced
- Cure and walkthrough: We tell you how long to stay off it while it cures, and roughly when it should be resealed for how much sun and traffic it gets

Halifax paver sealing and cleaning FAQs
How often should pavers be cleaned and resealed in Halifax?
Most paver surfaces here do well with a clean once a year and a reseal every two to three years. Our damp weather and freeze and thaw winters are harder on pavers than a dry climate, so shaded patios and high-traffic driveways can be on the shorter end of that.
Sealing is typically done every 3–5 years, depending on traffic, sun exposure, and the type of sealer used.
Will sealing stop the weeds and moss coming back?
It won’t make them disappear forever, but it makes a big difference. The weeds and moss take hold in open, sand-starved joints, so once we re-sand the joints and seal the surface, there’s far less room for them to root and far less moisture sitting on top. You’ll see a lot less of it, and what does appear wipes or rinses off easily instead of digging in. Sealed pavers are much less work to keep clean than bare ones.
What is the white haze on my pavers?
That white, chalky haze is efflorescence, and it’s salt and minerals working their way out of the concrete as moisture evaporates from the pavers. It’s natural and it doesn’t mean the pavers are failing, but it does dull the look. We can treat and remove it as part of the cleaning, and sealing afterward helps slow how much of it comes back to the surface.
Natural finish or wet look, what’s the difference?
A natural finish keeps the pavers looking the way they do now, just clean, with no added sheen. A wet look, or enhanced finish, deepens the color and adds a slight sheen, like the pavers look right after rain. It comes down to taste. Some people love the richer wet look, others want their patio to look untouched. Both protect the same way. We’ll show you the difference before you decide.
Can you fix pavers that have shifted or sunk?
Yes, we can. But this is a re-levelling job, not part of a standard clean and seal. When pavers heave or dip, it’s usually the base underneath that’s moved, so they have to be lifted, the base re-levelled, and the pavers reset before any sealing makes sense. We’ll assess it during the estimate and tell you honestly whether you’re looking at a clean and seal or whether some areas need re-leveling first.
How long do I need to stay off them after sealing?
Plan to keep foot traffic off for about 24 hours and vehicles off for 48 to 72 hours, though it depends on the sealer and the weather on the day. Damp or cool conditions slow the cure, which is one more reason we don’t rush it. We’ll give you exact timing when we finish so you know when it’s safe to walk and park on again.
How much does paver and interlock sealing cost in Halifax?
It depends on the size of the area, the condition of the pavers, and whether you want a clean only or a full re-sand and seal. Because every patio and driveway is different, we give a free, no-obligation quote rather than a flat rate. Send us a few photos and the rough dimensions and we’ll get you a price before any work starts.
